Key with key fob in hand

While your VW key fob battery will last for years, eventually you’ll need to know how to change the battery in a VW key. Use this guide to walk through the process, or visit the service experts at Young Volkswagen in Easton to let us take care of it for you!

Which VW Key Battery Do I Need?

Before you can change the battery in your VW key fob, you’ll need to get the correct VW key battery. Depending on the age of your VW vehicle, there are two different VW key battery replacement options:

  • Models before 1999: If you drive an older VW vehicle with a fob that looks like a simple Volkswagen car key, there’s a good chance that you need a CR1632 battery.
  • Models after 1999: Most new VW models use a fob that looks more like a small pod with buttons on one side, and a retractable emergency key. You’ll most likely need a CR2032 battery.

VW Key Battery Replacement: Step-by-Step

No matter which Volkswagen you drive in Bethlehem, there are a few easy steps in how to change the battery in a VW key fob. First, grab a small flat-head screwdriver and your VW key battery. Now you’re ready to get started:

  1. Hold the button on your Volkswagen key fob until the emergency key pops out.
  2. Grasp the fob firmly in your hand, or attach it to a small metal key ring that you can hold on your index finger.
  3. Locate the seam which connects the lid and the base of your fob. Use your fingers to create a small distance between the two, and then use the flat-head screwdriver to finish prying them apart. Take care to avoid scratching the inside.
  4. Take out the dead battery and insert the new one, with the positive side facing downward.
  5. Close the remote case tightly to hold everything in place, and then get back on the road!

How to Start the Car without Your Smart Key

Getting trapped outside your vehicle in Allentown due to a dead key fob is so frustrating, especially if you have your family or a load of groceries in tow. Luckily, VW engineers have you covered, as even older VW key fobs contain an emergency key that doesn’t require battery power to work. Even if your Tiguan or Jetta has keyless entry or push button start, you can still start your car without your smart key. Simply hold the emergency key below the ignition to get the engine started.

Volkswagen Key Replacement

Sometimes, the issue with your VW key fob isn’t the battery, but that you’ve lost it completely. Cutting a new key can be a costly purchase, so keeping your spare key in a safe place is advised. Stroudsburg drivers in need of a VW key replacement will need to visit a certified VW service center to order a new key, being sure to bring a driver’s license and proof of vehicle ownership.
