How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

mechanic changing tire

How often should you rotate your tires? The proper interval for when to rotate tires is usually between 5,000 and 7,500 miles. However, there may be different recommendations from the manufacturer, so it is important to take a look at your owner’s manual. When to rotate tires can also vary based on your vehicle’s drivetrain. This is why the service experts at Young Volkswagen have created a quick guide to answer the common question, “How often should you rotate your tires?”

Rotating Tires: FWD and RWD Vehicles

The drivetrain of your vehicle determines where power from the engine is sent. If you have a front-wheel drive vehicle, the power is transferred to the front tires. For rear-wheel drive vehicles, the power is sent to the rear tires. Because one set of tires receives a majority of the engine power, those tires obviously wear down more rapidly. This is why a tire rotation is necessary. If you have a front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive vehicle, the following information is essential for a proper tire rotation:

  • For FWD or RWD cars, it is best to have your tires rotated every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. If your owner’s manual has different recommendations for your vehicle, follow its advice.
  • If you are rotating your tires at home, you will have to flip sides when moving the rear tires on a FWD car. For example, the rear right tire will go on the front left. When you move the front tires to the back, those tires will remain on the same side.
  • If you have a RWD car, the reverse is true. Swap sides as you move the front tires to the back, but keep the rear tires on the same side before bringing them to the front.
  • In addition to how many miles you drive, how you drive also affects how often a tire rotation is necessary. For example, if you do a lot of off-roading, your vehicle should have the tires rotated more often. The service experts at Young Volkswagen would be glad to make recommendations for maintenance based on your driving habits.

Rotating Tires: AWD Vehicles

What if you are wondering how many miles before you should rotate tires on an AWD model? The interval varies from FWD and RWD models. On an AWD vehicle, each tire wears differently and at different speeds. Because of this, it is best to perform a tire rotation on an AWD vehicle every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. It is still a good idea to see what is recommended by the automaker in your owner’s manual.

Why Rotate Tires?

Tire rotations help your tires perform at their best for as long as possible. Other benefits of regular tire rotations include:

  • Improved traction on slippery roads
  • Less noise on the road
  • Less unnecessary stress on the drivetrain

If you want to ensure optimal safety on the roads of Stroudsburg no matter the weather, tire care is essential. Even the best maintained tires will need to be replaced over time. If you think your tires are in need of replacement, we can help you find the right tires for your vehicle.
