Why is Tire Rotation Necessary?

All tires don’t wear evenly. For example, the outside edges of the front tires show greater wear because of the strain of turning, however the rear wheels experience more even wear and tear. If you do not rotate your tires, they will need to be replaced sooner due to the fact that they have not worn down at even rates.

How Often to Rotate Your Tires

If you have a front-wheel drive or a rear-wheel drive vehicle, it is best to have your tires rotated every 5,000-7,500 miles. If you have an AWD vehicle, tire rotations are recommended more frequently, usually every 3,000-5,000 miles. With an AWD vehicle, all tires are actively engaged so they wear down more rapidly. While these are general guidelines, it is always best to check your owner’s manual to see if there are different recommendations from the automaker for your particular make and model.

Tire Position

  • FWD Tires: The front tires should be moved to the back of the car and should remain in the same left/right positions. Switch sides when moving the rear tires to the front of the vehicle.
  • RWD Tires: If you have a RWD car, the opposite is true. When the rear tires are moved to the front of the car, they should stay on the same side. However, when you switch the front tires to the rear of the car, they will need to swap sides.

Steps for How to Do a Tire Rotation

If you are wondering how to do a tire rotation at home, you will need to have a few supplies handy before you can get started: a car jack, lug nut wrench, and a set of car jacks. If you have everything that you need on hand, follow these steps to rotate the tires:

  1. Make sure the parking brake is engaged.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels. You do not want to fully remove them. It will simplify the process of unscrewing them when the tire is elevated.
  3. Lift up one wheel with a car jack and place the jack stand underneath it.
  4. Remove the rest of the tires one by one, placing a jack stand under each wheel.
  5. Now is a good time to see if your tire pressure is at the optimal level. Once this is achieved, rotate the tires based on tire position, and screw the lug nuts on by hand as far as you can.
  6. Lower the car from the jack stands. Finish tightening the nuts with the lug nut wrench. Work diagonally from one to another in a star pattern so that all lug nuts are tightened evenly. This helps to prevent the brake rotor from warping.
